This glossary provides definitions of key terms used in criminal law and procedure in England and Wales.

Key Terms

Indictment — the formal document containing the charges against a defendant in the Crown Court.

Committal — the process by which a case is sent from the magistrates’ court to the Crown Court for trial or sentence.

Plea — the defendant’s formal response to the charge, either guilty or not guilty.

Bail — the release of a defendant pending trial, subject to conditions if necessary.

Custody time limits — the maximum periods for which a defendant may be held in custody pending trial.
