Family Code of the Russian Federation

Introduction

The Family Code of the Russian Federation (Semeyny Kodeks), adopted in 1995, governs marriage, divorce, parental rights, child support, and guardianship in Russia.

Marriage and Divorce

Marriage requires mutual consent, minimum age of 18, and registration with civil registry offices (ZAGS). Marriage may be dissolved by mutual agreement in ZAGS or by court order in contested cases. Courts address property division, child custody, and spousal support.

Parental Rights and Child Support

Parents have equal rights and responsibilities. Child support is calculated as a percentage of income (25% for one child, 33% for two, 50% for three or more). Parents may be deprived of parental rights for failure to fulfill obligations.

Adoption

Adoption requires court approval and serves the best interests of the child. International adoption is permitted but subject to restrictions. Adoptive parents undergo training and evaluation.
