The CSDP was introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon (2007, in force 2009), succeeding the earlier European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) established by the Treaty of Amsterdam. Article 42(1) TEU provides that the CSDP &amp;ldquo;shall be an integral part of the common foreign and security policy&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;shall provide the Union with an operational capacity drawing on civilian and military assets.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/p&gt;</description>
