Directive 2004/39/EC on markets in financial instruments (MiFID I)
Overview
The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID I) established the harmonized regulatory framework for investment services and regulated markets in the EU. It introduced the concept of the European passport for investment firms, classification of clients (retail, professional, eligible counterparties), conduct of business obligations, best execution requirements, and transaction reporting. MiFID I also regulated alternative trading systems (multilateral trading facilities or MTFs) and set requirements for regulated markets. Directive 2004/39/EC was replaced by MiFID II in 2018.
