Open States (State Legislative Data)

A comprehensive platform aggregating legislative data from all 50 US states, territories, and DC.

Open States is an open data project that collects, standardizes, and publishes legislative data from all 50 US states, plus DC, Puerto Rico, and other territories. Founded by the Sunlight Foundation, it is now maintained by a community of volunteers. The platform provides bill text and status, voting records, committee information, and legislator profiles. Data is available under a Creative Commons BY license.

API and Bulk Access

The Open States API allows searching and filtering legislation by state, session, sponsor, subject, and keyword. It provides structured data on bill versions, votes, and legislative calendars. Legislator profiles include biographical information, committee assignments, and contact details. The platform also offers bulk data exports. Data is updated continuously during legislative sessions, and archival data extends back to the early 2000s for most states.
